A stand-alone photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard with seat harness belts finished in color for the model of the Ilyushin Il-2 in the 1943 production version, 1:48 scale. The steel version is stiffer than brass: a belt holds its shape once bent, so it can hang freely over the edge of the seat without needing anything underneath it. It is the smallest change you can make to a cockpit, and at the same time the one that shows most.
A plastic seat usually has the straps only suggested in relief, or does not have them at all. Photo-etched belts have a thickness true to scale, legible buckles and fittings, and they can be laid out irregularly, as they would lie in a real machine. It is exactly this detail that makes the greatest difference, when you look into an open cockpit, between a model built from the box and a model that has been worked on.
Belts finished in color are not painted over. Cut them out with a scalpel, shape them with tweezers in small steps and go carefully at the line of the bend, so that the print does not flake off. They are glued with an absolute minimum of cyanoacrylate glue, and the gel version gives you time to fine-tune the position. Sand the relief of the straps off the plastic seat first, otherwise the new part will not seat. If you want to lift the whole cockpit, reach for one of the larger photo-etched sets for the same type.
This is an accessory set, not an airplane model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
