A set of masking parts for the glazing of the two-seat Ilyushin Il-2M3 ground-attack aircraft in 1:48. The paper pieces are applied to the canopy from outside and inside and match the shape of the clear parts of the Tamiya kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Il-2 became the most numerously built combat aircraft in history and its peculiarity was an armored bathtub into which the engine, the radiators and the pilot were literally built as into a shell. It was that which let it work a few tens of meters above the ground, where everything the opponent had was aimed at it. The version designated M3 brought a second seat with a gunner and a modified wing with swept outer sections, which improved the behavior of the heavier machine. The rear cockpit came about as a response to losses from fighters attacking the Il-2 from behind, where the earlier single-seat form had nothing to defend itself with.
The glazing of the two-seat Ilyushin has divided framing that can be outlined by hand only very slowly. The pre-cut pieces are applied to the glass, the edges of the frames fit exactly and after spraying they peel off together with the dried paint. The package allows for the shape of the canopy from the 1:48 Tamiya kit.
The rounded glass of the rear cockpit is best masked in sections, and it is worth leaving a longer pause between two coats of paint so that nothing lifts at the edge. Keeping the airbrush pressure low is also advisable, because a strong stream of paint finds its way under an edge more easily than a fine mist.
