A masking set for a 1:48 model of the Italian IMAM Ro.43 carrier reconnaissance biplane. The stated contents are two glazing masks, for the view from outside as well as from inside, and two national insignia masks. The templates are cut to the kit by Special Hobby. The film holds its final shape, so cutting the frames out with a scalpel is not needed.
Responsibility details are not available.
In the 1930s the airborne eyes of warships took the form of small floatplanes launched by catapult from the deck and, after alighting on the water, lifted back aboard by crane. For this task the Regia Marina chose a biplane with a single central float, outrigger floats under the lower wing and an upper flying surface cranked into a gull wing, which opened up the pilot's view forward. The wings could be folded along the fuselage so that the machine took up as little room as possible on a cramped deck. It flew from cruisers and battleships, watched over convoys and searched for enemy formations, and although its performance soon became dated, in the first years of the war it remained the most widespread shipboard type of its fleet.
Masking film ages even lying untouched in its envelope. It hardens, loses its flexibility and, when lifted out, the edge crumbles very slightly, so the edge of the sprayed line looks ragged and the frame stops being straight. Before you fit the template to the model, look at it against the light and run a fresh scalpel blade along any furred edge using a straightedge. Store the film on its original backing as well and away from warm places, because thermal cycles shorten its life faster than time alone.
