A small figure of an animal with a pilot's helmet on its head is not a technical detail of a machine but a decorative mascot. It stands beside the landing gear, on the edge of a stand or among the equipment on the apron and gives the scene an unexpected touch of humor. The same subject comes out in two further sizes, so it can be matched to however large a model you happen to be building.
Animal mascots have accompanied flying from the beginning: they appear in nose art, in emblems and as talismans carried along in the cockpit. The figure carries this tradition into scale and works as shorthand that even a viewer who knows nothing about the particular type of machine will understand.
Because of its size it stands out best in the foreground, where the light falls, or on the edge of a base, where it will not hide the main model. The fur is built up by gradual lightening: a darker ground, and once dry a light pass of a lighter tone over the back, the ears and the tail. Leave the helmet smooth and glossy by contrast, so that it stands against the matte fur. The eyes can be suggested with the tip of a fine brush and finished with a drop of gloss varnish, which gives them life.
The animal figure comes unpainted and the paints are obtained separately.
