A plastic kit of the Japanese Kawasaki T-4 jet trainer in 1:48 scale from Hasegawa of Japan, issued in the configuration of the Blue Impulse display team for 2022. The year in the name concerns the season whose markings the box covers, not the scale of the model.
The Kawasaki T-4 is a two-seat trainer with two jet engines, developed for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force as a domestic replacement for older training machines. It serves for advanced pilot training and to a lesser extent for liaison tasks. It is best known, however, in the form used by the Blue Impulse display team: the white and blue scheme has become one of the most recognizable aircraft finishes of all and it changes in detail from season to season, which is exactly why the boxes of the individual years differ from each other.
The white base is the most demanding part of this scheme. The surface has to be perfectly smooth, because white emphasizes every scratch and every unfilled seam. Spray over a light gray base in thin coats and do not rush. Mask the blue areas only once the white is completely dry, best with good masking tape with a smooth edge. Apply the large decals over a gloss surface and use a decal softener so that they settle into the panel lines. In 1:48 the cockpit deserves care, because it is clearly visible under the clear canopy. At the end blend the surface with a semi-gloss to gloss clear coat; a flat varnish would not look right on a display machine.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
