About product

Propellers for the Lancaster Mk.I 1:48 (Quickboost)

A detailing accessory, not an airplane model. The set replaces the propellers on a model of the four-engine Avro Lancaster Mk.I bomber in 1:48 scale with resin castings. The number of pieces in the package is stated on the packaging.

Why replace the propellers

On a four-engine aircraft the propellers repeat on both wings side by side, so any inaccuracy is visible twice or four times over. An injection-molded propeller blade has a needless thickness because of the mold and a softly rounded trailing edge; the profile of the blade, that is its twist from root to tip, tends to be simplified and the root cuffs have only a suggested shape. A resin casting manages a thin blade with a sharp finish and a more pronounced twist, because it does not have to allow for being drawn from a mold. On the model this shows above all in profile and when seen from the front, where the propeller disc stops looking like a flat paddle.

Working with resin and painting

The blades are thin and fragile, so when separating them from the casting block work with a saw and with the part supported, never with nippers. Level the mating face of the hub and try it dry to see whether the propeller sits in the engine nacelle without force; sometimes the shaft has to be adjusted slightly or the seat drilled out. Wash the castings in warm soapy water before painting because of the mold release agent. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). On British machines of this era the blades were usually dark with a light warning tip, so it pays to mask the tips with tape and spray them last. On propellers in particular very gentle weathering works well: an overly dry brush on the edges and a light scuff on the leading edge of the blade near the tip, where a propeller wore most. Sand wet and with your airways protected.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of British heavy bombers in 1:48 scale.
  • Modelers who dislike thick propeller blades out of the box.
  • Anyone after a clean view from the front, where the propellers dominate.
  • Those who can manage thin and fragile castings.

This is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

The real subject was four-engine. The number of pieces is stated on the packaging.

Usually the mating face of the hub has to be leveled and the shaft adjusted or the seat in the nacelle drilled out. Try them dry.

On British machines of this era the blades were usually dark with a light warning tip. Mask the tips with tape and spray them last.

It cannot, as cement for plastic does not bite into resin. Use a cyanoacrylate glue.
