A photo-etched set of small protective items meant for plastic models of American military vehicles in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit: the parts are glued onto a model already built or under way and replace what a plastic mold manages only in a coarse form. It is precisely the guards of headlights and periscopes that are among the parts where the difference between plastic and photo-etch is visible at first glance.
Headlights and periscopes were among the first things to get damaged on combat vehicles - a branch, a flying stone or careless loading was enough. Protective cages of thin rods and frames of bent flat strip were therefore fitted over them. In reality they were slender structures that you could see through. Injection-molded plastic cannot do that slenderness: a rod that should be tenths of a millimeter in scale comes out as a massive bar. Photo-etched metal, by contrast, keeps the correct thickness and the see-through quality of the mesh.
The bends are the main thing with this set. Cut the part out with a scalpel, sand the tab down and bend along the etched line - best in a photo-etch bender, otherwise over the blade of a scalpel pressed to a straight edge. Bend the metal in one movement; adjusting it again and again fatigues it and the part cracks. Glue the frames with super glue applied on the tip of a piece of wire, not straight from the bottle. Before painting, degrease everything with alcohol and go over it with a primer for metal, or the base coat will peel during handling. Once painted, a dark wash helps, as it sets the cages apart from the body visually.
This is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The base model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
