The set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard of the LööK range brings a finished colored instrument panel for a model of the two-seat Lockheed Martin F-16D Block 50 in 1:48 scale. The panel comes finished in color, so the most demanding painting of the whole build is done away with, the one where dials, warning lights and labels a few tenths of a millimeter in size are dotted in by hand. The modeler seats the part in the cockpit and has dealt with the place everybody looks at first when looking into an open cockpit.
The quickest road to a usable cockpit
The cockpit of a modern combat aircraft is densely filled with displays and control panels, and it is precisely their rendering that sets a handsome model apart from an average one. LööK deals with this part of the build in a single piece and without the long business of layering paint.
The F-16D is the two-seat version of the F-16 Fighting Falcon multipurpose aircraft. The rear seat has full controls, so the machine serves for training and for combat tasks alike. The Block 50 rendering belongs among the later production blocks and is powered by a General Electric F110 engine, unlike the blocks with a Pratt and Whitney powerplant. The two-seat machines are popular with modelers mainly on account of the longer cockpit and the richly equipped working places of both members of the crew.
Try the part dry before gluing; a finished panel tends to be somewhat thicker than the plastic original and sometimes the seating in the cockpit has to be adjusted. Do not overspray the colored surface and protect it from cyanoacrylate glue, whose fumes make glossy surfaces matte. The displays come out well when a drop of gloss varnish, which imitates glass, is applied onto them after seating.
