Die-cut masks for spraying the early form of the radar absorbent coating on a model of the F-35A in 1:48 scale. The serrated borders come out exactly to the subject.
Responsibility details are not available.
The radar absorbent coating on the surface of this machine differs only slightly in shade from the paint around it, yet its outline is unmistakable. The borders of the panels and of the access door covers are run into sharp sawtooth points, because a straight edge would return the reflection back toward its source. You cannot draw a shape like that with a brush, and a decal would ripple or break on a doubly curved surface. A die-cut mask follows the outline regardless of how the surface beneath it swells.
The set is aimed at the early form of the coating. It differs from the later one both in the number of separately defined areas and in their layout over the airframe, and the difference shows in the amount of work too: there are considerably more early pieces. Before you reach for the airbrush, compare a photograph of the particular aircraft you are building. The two forms differ according to the production batch and mixing them up is one of those errors a knowing viewer spots immediately.
The masks are laid onto a cured base finish, pressed down with a burnisher, and the shade of the coating is sprayed over them thinned well down, so that it does not run under the edge. They are taken off soon after drying, while the paint is still flexible. Reach for the narrow strips with smooth-jawed tweezers; a sharp point tears the paper easily and a cut border cannot be mended. The work is lengthy and calls for calm, but the result holds a crisp edge even where a border curves around an arc. The set deals with the surface of the airframe, not with the cockpit glazing or technical lettering.
