1:48 Lockheed P-38F/G Lightning nose gun bay is a resin add-on set from Eduard for detailing the gun bay in the nose. It is an accessory, not an aircraft model.

An add-on set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard in 1:48 scale that lets you open up and faithfully fit out the gun bay in the nose of the nacelle of the P-38F or P-38G Lightning fighter. It holds resin castings with the interior fittings of the bay, which a kit out of the box usually handles with nothing but a closed panel. The set is not an aircraft kit and cannot be used on its own; it is glued into a plastic model.
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning had its gun armament unusually concentrated in the nose of the central nacelle, that is on the axis of the aircraft rather than in the wings. The pilot therefore did not have to deal with converging fire as on ordinary fighters and the effective range was greater. The bay in the nose was accessible through hinged panels so that the armament could be serviced and the ammunition replenished. The F and G versions are among the early production forms of the type.
An open gun bay means cutting into the plastic; the panels in the nose have to be cut out. Cut with a margin and finish the opening with a file to match the new part, trying it dry and rather in small steps. Wash the resin in warm soapy water before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw and sand wet with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). The inside of the bay comes out best with a rich base, a dark wash in the corners and fine drybrushing on the edges, so that the detail stands out.
This is an add-on set, not a model kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
