At Eduard, LööK is a separate range of accessories that brings two things together in one package: a three-dimensional, color-finished resin instrument panel and photo-etched steel restraint belts. It is not a model or a whole cockpit: it is a targeted improvement of the two most closely watched details of a cockpit. Compared with a flat photo-etched panel, a cast panel has genuine depth: the dials are recessed, the bezels stand out and a shadow forms when seen from the side, which flat photo-etch can never give.
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was an American twin-engine fighter aircraft with the unconventional layout of a twin-boom tail and a central nacelle for the pilot. The P-38H version was built in 1943 and brought more powerful Allison powerplants with turbochargers; in service it was limited by its cooling capacity, which was only addressed on the following versions. The cockpit is set high and is largely glazed, so the interior stays clearly visible on a model and an investment in a better instrument panel tells.
First wash the resin part in lukewarm water with a detergent, so that remnants of release agent are removed, as otherwise neither glue nor varnish will hold. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw or a cutting disc, not by breaking it, and level the surface on abrasive paper; protect your airways when sanding resin. The panel is glued with cyanoacrylate, not with cement for plastic. Dry-fit to see how much of the plastic of the original part has to be taken away for the panel to sit at the right depth. Shape the steel belts over a rounded tool and let them drape freely over the seat.
The set is an accessory for a plastic model and is not a stand-alone kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
