The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was an American two-seat reconnaissance aircraft built for flight at high speed and great altitude. To bear the heat that such flight generates through friction with the air, its structure was largely of titanium and the surface received a dark finish, from which the aircraft got its nickname. The landing gear retracts and carries unusually massive wheels: three side by side on each main leg, so that the weight is spread over a larger area. The landing gear and its bays stay well in view on the finished model, which is why it pays to put work into them.
These are photo-etched parts in 1:48 scale aimed at the landing gear. Photo-etch allows thin sheets, stiffeners and small hinges to be shown at a thickness a molded part cannot reach. The parts list and where they go is given in the instructions supplied with the set. The set completes a finished kit; you will not build a model from it on its own.
The parts are held on the fret by thin tabs. Cut them with a sharp blade on a hard surface, not with pliers, and sand the remains of the tab away carefully. Make the bends along the scored line and help yourself with a bending tool or two blades. Glue with cyanoacrylate applied in a minute amount, as polystyrene cement does not hold on metal. Wash and degrease the parts before painting, otherwise the paint has nothing to grip. Finish and paint the landing gear bays before you close the assembly up.
The set is for modelers who have already worked with photo-etch and want to take the landing gear to a higher level of detail. Paints, glue and tools are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
