A set of die-cut self-adhesive masks for spraying the tail marking of German aircraft of the Second World War period, in the rendering used in the middle and late phase of the conflict. These are neither decals nor a kit: the marking is sprayed in paint and becomes part of the finish, so it has no carrier film. The rendering differed during the war both in its position on the vertical tail surface and in the width of the border, which is why the sheet covers both of the periods mentioned.
A sprayed marking has no glossy rim of film and runs no risk of silvering on an insufficiently glossy base. The marking is often placed across the edge of the fin and the rudder, where a large decal easily cracks or bunches up; a mask gets round that problem. The modeler also chooses the shade, so it fits in evenly with the camouflage and with the planned weathering.
The finish under the mask has to be cured, smooth and degreased. Press the edges down carefully, especially at the dividing gap of the rudder, where it is better to split the mask into two parts. Spray thin coats and let them flash off in between. With a two-color rendering, work from the light component to the dark one. Lift the mask off with tweezers shortly after the paint has dried, pulling at a sharp angle.
The package holds masks only. The model, paints and varnish are not included. These are the historical national insignia of period equipment; the set serves solely for the faithful modeling reconstruction of an aircraft of that period.
