Aichi M6A Seiran control surface and flap masks 1:48 - the sprayed shadow creates the impression that the moving surfaces are separate and deflected.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of die-cut masks for the control surfaces, ailerons and flaps of a Seiran model in 1:48 scale. It is not a set for the canopy or for the landing gear: the masks serve to spray a fine shadow around the moving surfaces. The shadow deepens the dividing gap optically and the surface then looks as if it were separate and deflected. It is an optical illusion: the part does not actually deflect anywhere and stays a fixed component of the model.
In reality there is a gap between the wing and the aileron into which no direct light falls, so a dark stripe arises along the whole length of the gap and the edge casts a shadow on the surface behind it. An injection mold can manage that gap only as an engraved line, which looks flat from up close. A sprayed transition supplies the missing shadow, and when the model is viewed normally the eye accepts it as real depth. It comes out best where the surfaces have not been brought out with a wash.
Work only on a finished, cured top coat. Seat the mask along the engraved lines, press it down all around and spray the shadow with a heavily thinned darker variant of the base shade, not with black. Spray in several almost invisible passes and keep checking how the result looks from a distance: the effect should be noticeable, but it must not look drawn on. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried; the transition can then still be softened with a light overspray of the base color.
