About product

Macchi M.39 in 1:48 scale by SBS Model

The kit captures the Macchi M.39, an Italian racing seaplane from the middle of the twenties, in 1:48 scale. SBS Model has long devoted itself to the racing and record aircraft of the interwar era and also makes this type in the smaller 1:72 scale, so you can pick the size to suit your display case.

The real subject

The Macchi M.39 came out of Mario Castoldi's design office as a machine specialized for the Schneider Trophy, that is, for the fastest air race of its day. It was a low-wing monoplane with a wire-braced wing, set on a pair of floats, with the pilot in an open cockpit far to the rear. Power came from a liquid-cooled Fiat AS.2 V12 engine; for the sake of aerodynamics the cooling surfaces were built right into the skin. In 1926 Mario de Bernardi won the Schneider Trophy race on this type, and shortly afterwards a world speed record of over 400 km/h was set on the M.39. The experience from the M.39 then carried over into the other Italian racing machines that followed on from the Schneider Trophy.

Building and painting tips

A racing seaplane stands or falls on a smooth surface and on the exact seating of the floats. Try the assembly dry first, let the main parts cure perfectly and only then deal with the struts. Before painting, spray the model with a filler primer, which reveals small unevennesses and traces of sanding. The characteristic Italian racing red comes out only on a carefully smoothed base; lay it on in thin coats over a light base. Finish the surface with a gloss clear coat so that it matches the polished skin of the real racing aircraft. Leave rigging the bracing wires for the very end.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of racing and record aircraft of the interwar era
  • Anyone interested in the history of the Schneider Trophy and in Italian aviation
  • Builders of seaplanes looking for an unusual shape for a display case
  • More experienced modelers used to small parts and to rigging bracing wires

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The model is in 1:48 scale. SBS Model also makes the same type in the smaller 1:72 scale.

A liquid-cooled Fiat AS.2 V12. For the sake of air resistance the cooling surfaces were built into the skin of the airframe and the floats.

Rather not. A racing seaplane has small parts and floats with bracing, and it calls for careful smoothing of the surface before painting.

In 1926 Mario de Bernardi won the Schneider Trophy with it, and shortly afterwards a world speed record of over 400 km/h was set on this type.
