The basic mask set for the model of the fighter P-51B Mustang in 1:48 scale. The masks are pre-cut from a self-adhesive sheet to the shape of the parts of the particular Tamiya 61042 kit. The BASIC step denotes the extent of the set: it covers the main glazed areas, while the extended steps add further elements for some of the sets.
The P-51B version differs from the later Mustangs in the shape of the cockpit canopy. The frames are narrow and run over curves, so cutting tape by hand calls for a steady hand, a sharp knife and plenty of patience. A pre-cut mask saves most of that work and the edge comes out straight even where a frame breaks over a curve. It is one of the simplest ways to lift the level of the model markedly.
The P-51B is a fighter powered by a V12 engine, which markedly improved its performance at greater altitudes compared with the earlier versions of the Mustang. The characteristic feature of this version is the framed cockpit canopy, replaced on the later machines by a bubble canopy.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
