A kit of the light Mil Mi-2 helicopter in the Mi-2S configuration, offered in 1:48 scale by the Polish manufacturer Mistercraft. It is a classic kit for gluing and painting, not a finished model. The 1:48 scale is popular with helicopters because it offers enough room for the detail of the cabin and the landing gear, while the finished model stays reasonably sized for a display case.
The Mi-2 is a light multipurpose helicopter with a pair of turboshaft engines placed above the cabin, a three-blade main rotor and a tail rotor on the tail boom. It came about at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s and the vast majority of machines were built under license in Poland. From the start the design was conceived as a universal platform: according to the equipment of the cabin, the machines served to carry people and cargo, for liaison flights, for training, for medical and police tasks and for work in agriculture. The NATO code for this type is Hoplite. Thanks to simple maintenance and low operating costs the Mi-2 stayed in service for whole decades and in civil roles it flies to this day.
First put the parts together dry, so that you know where the seams will need fine-tuning. Glue the plastic parts with a thin cement for polystyrene, which runs into the joint by wicking. The cabin of the helicopter is largely glazed, so it pays to give time to the interior and to the frames of the glazing; fit the glazing only after spraying and mask it. Before painting, apply a primer, which will even the surface out and reveal imperfect sanding. Helicopter models tend to have thin rotor blades, so hold them by the root while handling them and glue them on at the end of the build. Apply the decals on a gloss varnish and then matte the joints down according to the surface shade you want.
