Markings for a Bulgarian MiG-21 from the farewell period, when the type was leaving the inventory of that air force after long decades.
Responsibility details are not available.
A farewell to the MiG-21 is one of those moments that enthusiasts remember in every air force. Bulgaria operated this type for an exceptionally long time, and its closing display sealed a chapter that had begun deep in the 1960s.
The set belongs to a line devoted to MiG-21s around the world. The MiG-21 served on four continents, in more than fifty countries and in dozens of versions, so a collector of markings has plenty to choose from. The Bulgarian chapter is interesting for how long the type held on in a front-line role.
Aircraft prepared for a last flight tend to be carefully washed, often receive occasional lettering or anniversary symbols, and their markings differ from the ordinary operational state. It is exactly this difference that makes such a subject a rewarding model.
The sheet is drawn for 1:48 scale. The surface of the MiG-21 is heavily broken up, so lay the decals on a gloss base and let them settle over the panel lines with a drop of decal softener. Neither paints nor a kit are in the package.
The last flight of a particular type with a particular air force is an event that does not come again. The machines are polished for it, they receive occasional lettering and photographers document them down to the last rivet, so the modeler has reference material that cannot be obtained for an ordinary operational example. A model built from such a subject carries a story that can be told.
