The set contains photo-etched pilot's seat belts for a MiG-29K model in 1:48 scale. It is an accessory, not an airplane kit — the model itself is obtained separately. At Eduard the STEEL designation marks a version made of steel: the material is springier and stronger than soft brass etch, so the belt holds the shape you bend it into and does not spring back. The parts come in a colored finish, so once they are glued in they need no further painting, which suits modelers who are only starting out with etched parts.
Why the belts of all things
With an open cockpit the seat belts are one of the first details anyone notices. On plastic parts they tend to be only suggested in relief, or they are missing altogether, and replacing them with etch raises the credibility of a cabin more than most other small improvements.
The MiG-29K is the carrier-borne variant of the MiG-29 fighter, adapted for operation from an aircraft carrier. Against the land-based version it has strengthened landing gear for harder touchdowns, a tailhook, folding wings to save space in the hangar and changes to the structure against corrosion in a high-salinity environment.
Separate the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface rather than with cutters — pulling deforms the etch. Make the bends over the edge of a bending tool or a razor blade. They are bonded with super glue applied with a pin in a really small amount; the gel version gives more time to settle a part into place. Let the belts fall freely over the edge of the seat and the tub, so that they do not look like a glued-on plank. Do not clear coat the colored surfaces across the board; apply a matte coat, if any, only in spots.
This is an add-on set, not a model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
