A self-adhesive masking set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a model of the Mil Mi-35M attack helicopter in 1:48 scale. It is not a model nor a decal, but a set of precisely die-cut masks of yellow Japanese kabuki paper for crisply painting the frames of the glazing and other clear parts.
The helicopter has extensive glazing on the pilot's and the gunner's cockpits with a great many frames, and masking them by hand with strips is slow work. The pre-cut masks seat on the frames exactly, so the glass stays clean and the frames get their color with crisp edges. The set usually takes in other small areas to be masked as well.
Degrease the surfaces, lift the masks off with tweezers and press them precisely onto the frames, pressing the edges down with a toothpick because of paint creeping under them. Spray in thin coats and take the mask off while the paint is still fresh. Kabuki paper can also be shaped to the curved areas of the glazing.
