1:48 N1K1-j Shiden Nat. Insignias is a Dead Design masking set for spraying the Japanese national insignia onto the Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden fighter in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set is meant to let the red hinomaru circles on the Shiden be sprayed in paint directly onto the surface of the model. That does away with the worry of a thin decal, which readily wrinkles on a rounded wing, and the insignia becomes part of the finish rather than a film laid over it.
The Shiden came about by an unusual route: by converting the Kyofu floatplane fighter into a land-based machine. From that origin it kept a wing set high on the fuselage, and it therefore needed exceptionally long landing gear legs that shortened telescopically on retraction. It was precisely this complicated design that gave the machine the greatest trouble in service. It was armed with four cannons, it had large ailerons and it did very well in a horizontal fight; the Allies designated it with the code name George.
A red circle comes out well only on a perfectly smooth base, so sand the area beforehand with the finest paper and degrease it. On the upper surface of the wing the insignia lies close to the leading edge, where the surface curves noticeably: lay the mask from the center to the edges and press the perimeter down with a blunt wooden stick. Apply the paint in several really thin coats. A single heavy coat creates a ridge on the edge of the mask that stays apparent even after it is lifted.
