1:48 N1K2-j Shiden Nat. Insignias is a set of Dead Design masks for spraying the national insignia onto the reworked version of the Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden fighter in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
This set deals with a single but highly visible job: getting the red hinomaru circles onto a model of the late Shiden in paint from an airbrush. The finished insignia then lies in the same plane as the surrounding finish and after a matte coat is sprayed over it no outline of a film is left behind.
The N1K2-J version was not a small change but a deep redesign. The wing moved to the low position, which did away with the troublesome tall landing gear of the previous version, the fuselage was lengthened and the tail surfaces were given a new shape. The result was a machine with markedly fewer production parts, simpler to build as well as to fly. It ranks among the best Japanese fighters of the end of the war and it was committed above all with the units defending the home islands against air raids.
The insignia on the side of the fuselage almost always crosses an engraved panel line. To keep paint from getting under the edge of the mask, spray the whole perimeter thinly with the base shade first: any seepage is then filled with the same color as the surroundings. Only after that let the red go on. Lift the mask while the paint is still fresh and has not yet hardened; it then comes off with a substantially smaller risk of pulling the edge of the finish away.
