1:48 Nakajima C6N1/C6N2 Saiun landing gear bay masks from Dead Design. Die-cut film replaces cotton wool and paper, which shed fibers and shift inside a bay.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of masks from Dead Design cut for the landing gear bays of a model of the Nakajima C6N Saiun reconnaissance aircraft in 1:48 scale. These are not canopy masks; the set covers the open bays for as long as the airframe is being sprayed.
Cotton wool and dampened paper are improvisations that work for a while only. Cotton wool sheds fibers that catch in fresh paint, and once it has cured they cannot be removed without damaging the finish. Paper works as it dries and peels away, so mist from the airbrush gets into the corner of the bay. A die-cut mask does none of that: it lies in one plane, follows the shape of the opening and comes away in one piece when it is lifted.
Paint the interior of the bay, let it dry through properly and degrease the area around the opening. Lay the mask on, press it down around the perimeter and begin with a light pass; a heavy first coat is the one most likely to be forced under the edge. Once the top color has dried, lift the mask off with tweezers. If something did seep under it, put it right with a brush before the matte varnish goes onto the model; on a finished surface every touch-up shows.
The C6N Saiun was a fast carrier reconnaissance aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy with a crew of three and a slender fuselage, designed to evade interception by speed rather than by armament. The C6N1 and C6N2 designate its production variants.
