1:48 Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate landing gear bay masks from Dead Design. They close the bays off for the duration of the varnishing, so that the interior keeps its own shade.

A set of die-cut masks from Dead Design for the landing gear bays of a model of the Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate fighter in 1:48 scale. It covers the inside of the bays, not the canopy glazing.
A bay is a detail that is seen on a finished model from one angle only, but that is exactly why it pays off. When the top color gets into it during varnishing, it stops being clear where the structure ends and the skin begins, and with it the work you put into the interior disappears. The set offers a clean alternative to plugging the opening by improvisation.
Most trouble arises not when fitting the mask but when lifting it off. The mask should be taken off once the paint has dried but before the finish has cured completely, and always by pulling at an angle to the side, not straight up. If the edge of the varnish does begin to lift, run a sharp scalpel along the cut and only then pull the mask away. Adhesive residue on the surface is removed with alcohol on a cotton swab, not with an aggressive thinner, which would attack the paint.
The Ki-84 Hayate was a late fighter of the Japanese Army Air Force from Nakajima, which combined a powerful radial engine with good rate of climb and a sturdy structure. It was among the best-performing Japanese production fighters of its day.
