About product

Photo-etched set 1:48 North American P-51D-20 Mustang Weekend

A set of photo-etched parts in thin metal sheet that completes the Mustang kit in 1:48 scale. The word Weekend in the name refers to the simplified edition of the kit, which has no photo-etched parts in the box, so this accessory comes into its own there most of all. The package holds the photo-etched fret only; the aircraft model is not part of it. The maker is the Czech firm Eduard.

The real subject

The P-51D is the late variant of the Mustang fighter with a powerplant derived from the Merlin engine, with a teardrop canopy and a cut-down rear fuselage. It is precisely the cut-down spine and the all-round glazing that mean the cockpit is visible from every side and the interior cannot be hidden on a finished model. The D-20 designation belongs to a production block within the D series; the individual blocks differed in small details of armament and equipment.

Usage tips

Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard surface and degrease them before gluing. Make the bends in a modeling bender or between two razor blades. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin in the smallest possible amount. Cut away the plastic bosses where a photo-etched part is to go and level the surface. On the Mustang it pays to finish the cockpit before the fuselage is glued together and to fit the teardrop canopy at the very end so that it does not get dirty.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Second World War fighters in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers building the simpler edition of the kit with no photo-etched parts in the box
  • Those who want to raise the detail of a clearly visible cockpit
  • More experienced modelers used to working with metal

The accessory set is supplied without a kit, glue or paints.

FAQ

No. It is a set of photo-etched metal parts used to detail a kit in 1:48 scale that you already own.

It denotes the simplified edition of the kit, which is supplied without photo-etched parts. This set is prepared precisely for it.

Cyanoacrylate glue applied in the smallest possible amount. Plastic cement will not bond metal.

For shorter parts two razor blades and a straight edge will do; for longer bends a bender is considerably more accurate.
