A turned metal pitot tube and angle of attack probe for a model of the North American RA-5C Vigilante in 1:48 scale from MASTER. It replaces the fragile plastic parts on the nose.
Responsibility details are not available.
An accessory for a model builder, not an aircraft kit. The set brings turned metal replacements for two sensors that are very visible on this type: the pitot tube and the angle of attack probe. Both parts are thin and soft in plastic, bend easily even when taken off the frame and often lose their shape once the paint is on. The metal version has the right diameter along its whole length, holds its axis and does not twist.
The North American RA-5C Vigilante was a carrier-based supersonic reconnaissance aircraft of the US Navy, derived from the A-5 attack version. It is a large twin-engine machine with a long pointed nose and a high-mounted wing, operated from aircraft carriers from roughly the middle of the 1960s. The instrument probes on the nose are among the characteristic elements of its silhouette, so the way they are done has a great influence on the impression a model makes.
Cut off the plastic parts and level the surface so that the metal pin seats squarely. Drill the hole in stages, from a smaller diameter up to the target one, otherwise the thin wall of the nose will split. Fit the parts only when painting and clear coating are finished; you will save yourself masking and there is no risk of catching them while polishing. Glue with cyanoacrylate applied with a pin, not straight from the bottle. Degrease the metal before any painting and use a primer; the probes are often left in a metal shade, however, and only slightly darkened.
This is an accessory for modelers. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
