An injection-molded plastic kit of the American twin-engined fighter Lockheed P-38J Lightning in 1:48 scale from the Italian manufacturer Italeri. The model captures the characteristic twin-boom layout of this fighter. The package holds photo-etched parts, a decal sheet for several color schemes and color instructions.
The P-38 Lightning was a groundbreaking American heavy fighter with two tail booms, between which the pilot's cockpit and the concentrated armament were placed in a central nacelle. It was powered by two liquid-cooled Allison V-1710 V12 engines with turbochargers, each of around 1425 horsepower, thanks to which the aircraft reached a speed of over 660 km/h. The Lightning excelled in range and high-altitude performance and served as a fighter, a bomber escort, a photo-reconnaissance and an attack machine. The P-38J version had improved cooling and was among the most widespread.
Given the two booms, take care over the precise fit of the engine nacelles and the central cockpit, so that the model does not end up crooked - dry-fitting will help. Work the cockpit and the photo-etched parts up and accentuate them with a wash, and mask the glazing. Glue the plastic with liquid modeling cement, even out the surface with primer and apply the paint with an airbrush. A number of machines flew in bare metal, where metallic paints and panel transitions come into their own; others carried olive drab. Fit the drop tanks and bombs according to the chosen scheme, and complete the weathering with washes and exhaust stains.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
