This is a sheet of water-soaked decals from Kits-World in 1:48 scale. It is not a model and not a kit but an accessory applied to a model that has already been built and painted. The sheet is devoted to Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters deployed in the Pacific, specifically to machines from the range of the early E to G production versions. The number of schemes and the individual aircraft are given in the instructions enclosed with the sheet.
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was an American twin-engine fighter with an unusual twin-boom layout and a central nacelle in which the pilot sat and the armament was concentrated. Thanks to its two turbocharged engines it had great range for its day and good performance at high altitude, which told in the vast Pacific theater. The early versions designated E to G differed from the later machines above all in details of the power unit, the radiators and the cockpit equipment, so when building a model it is worth watching that the markings chosen match the particular version being built.
Decals are applied onto a glossy surface. Matte varnish has a microscopically broken surface in which air is trapped under the decal and a silvery veil appears. Seal the built model with glossy clear varnish first, soak the decal in warm water only until it can be moved on the backing paper, and transfer it into place. Help it settle with a softener so that the film clings to the engraved lines and rivets. Once it is dry, wash the surface to remove the adhesive residue and even the whole model out with a matte or semi-gloss coat. Anyone working with decals for the first time should try the procedure on an edge area that will later be covered.
