Covering of the panes for the American P-47D fighter in the form with the teardrop dome, 1:48 scale. It covers the outer panes of the cockpit and adds a pair of sheets with the markings.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Thunderbolt was among the heaviest single-engine fighters of the war and its late form brought a change the whole airfield envied its pilots. The high fuselage decking behind the cockpit was cut down and instead of a framed hood a transparent dome in the shape of a teardrop was seated on it, sliding back on rails. The framing disappeared from it practically completely, so the view to the side and to the rear became incomparably better than on older machines with the so-called razorback.
For a modeler that means the exact opposite of relief. Where there are no bars, there is also no guide along which tape could be led straight. The only edge the spraying has to respect is the lower rim of the dome, and that curves in all three axes at once. A hand cut comes off worst here of all types of canopy. Film cut to a precise outline, by contrast, is laid against the rim in a single movement and the edge comes out sharp around the whole circumference.
Inside lie the outer covering of the panes and a full pair of sheets with the markings, which exceeds the usual scope of the line. The star with bars and further markings arise by spraying through a die-cut outline. The film copies the parts of the Tamiya model. Do not look for the aircraft itself here.
It is sensible to fit the dome to the fuselage only after the surrounding skin has been varnished, otherwise a clean line is hard to keep around the rim. The markings are sprayed onto a dried base so that the film does not tear off the coat beneath it. When removing it, lead the pull along the length of the fuselage, not perpendicular to it; that way the edge of the spraying is not disturbed.
