About product

Faired exhausts for the early Mustangs

The P-51B and P-51C were the first production Mustangs with the Packard V-1650 engine, that is with a license-built Merlin. It was exactly that change that turned a machine originally used mainly for attacks on ground targets into a fighter able to escort bomber formations deep over the continent. Both versions still had the full fuselage spine behind the cockpit and the sides of the engine section stayed bare, so the row of stacks above the leading edge of the wing is among the most conspicuous details of the whole nose.

The parts capture the stacks together with the sheet-metal fairing that on some machines surrounded their outlets and protected the skin from the hot gases. Every pipe is open inside; on an injection-molded part such a shape usually ends up as a blind depression. The six openings on each side match a V12 engine.

Faired and bare versions alternated between machines according to the production block and to modifications made in the unit itself, so when building a particular aircraft it is worth comparing a period photograph. The fairing was there above all to turn the stream of exhaust gases away from the skin, off which the hot gas otherwise quickly stripped the matte paint.

Installation and painting

The original stacks are cut off the kit with a fine saw and the surface is leveled so that the new block seats without a gap. Separate the castings by cutting, not by snapping, because thin spots tear otherwise. Before gluing it is advisable to wash the surface in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry thoroughly.

In terms of shade the outlets are usually taken to a dark metal with a veil of rust, complemented by a light deposit of exhaust gases trailing back over the wing. The package covers only this part of the engine section; you prepare the rest of the aircraft from elsewhere.

FAQ

The shape follows the engine section of the early Mustang, so once the seat is leveled it will fit the usual models of the B and C versions in this scale. On some of them the cutout in the side of the fuselage has to be widened slightly.

Thin cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin or a piece of wire holds best. Ordinary cement for polystyrene does not work here, because it does not dissolve the material.

Yes. Washing in lukewarm soapy water takes off the mold release residue and the primer then holds considerably better.
