The set of national insignia masks for the Phantom FG.1 and FGR.2 in 1:48 scale from Dead Design. The markings are sprayed in paint straight onto the surface of the model, so they follow its shape perfectly.

This set does not concern the cabin. It serves for spraying the national insignia onto the airframe of a model of the British Phantom instead of sticking decals on.
On the Phantom the national insignia are found on surfaces that are far from smooth. There are engraved panel lines on them, transitions between parts, small raised details and the curvature of the fuselage. A decal on such a surface behaves like a film stretched over an unevenness: at the lines it breaks, on a curve it ripples and it has to be settled with softeners and corrected several times. Sprayed paint has no such layer. It sits on the surface the way the surface looks, and it runs into an engraved line just like the rest of the finish. The result is an insignia that has no edge, that has no outline shining around it and that after flattening is indistinguishable from the paint around it.
Stick the mask onto a dried and degreased finish, ideally one lightly clear coated smooth, because on a smooth surface the edge seals better. Across an engraved line press the edge of the mask down thoroughly, otherwise the paint will run under exactly there. Spray several light coats, not one thick one, and take the mask off once the paint has cured. Verify the placement of the insignia in advance in the instructions of the kit.
