An injection-molded plastic kit of the Chinese supersonic trainer in 1:48 scale from Trumpeter. The model has finely engraved surface detail, clear parts and, according to the manufacturer, a small photo-etched part as well. The box offers decals for the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLA), including technical stencils.
The Guizhou JL-9 (also Shanying, meaning mountain eagle) is a Chinese supersonic advanced trainer in service with the People's Liberation Army Air Force and naval aviation. Structurally it comes from the family derived from the MiG-21, but it received newly designed side air intakes, room for a larger radar, reworked wings with leading edge extensions and a modern two-seat cockpit with stepped canopies for a better view from the instructor's seat. The aircraft was developed in a remarkably short time and is used to train future combat pilots as well as in a light combat role. Thanks to its low operating costs and its retained supersonic speed, it bridges the gap between basic training and modern combat aircraft.
Use liquid cement for plastic and work in subassemblies. Finish and paint the two-seat cockpit before closing the fuselage, and mask both stepped canopies carefully. Glue the photo-etched part with cyanoacrylate. Apply primer before painting and spray with an airbrush; good acrylic or enamel paints suit the Chinese gray schemes, together with a patient accent of the engraved panel lines with a light wash. Clean up the sharp edges of the air intakes and the wing leading edges carefully before painting.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
