A clear cockpit canopy for the Polikarpov I-16 aircraft in the late form, shaped on a vacuum mold, 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Polikarpov I-16 was a Soviet single-seat fighter of the 1930s and for its day it was a remarkably modern machine: a low-wing aircraft with retractable landing gear at a time when most fighters still flew as biplanes with fixed wheels. The fuselage was short and stocky, which gave the aircraft the reputation of being extremely agile but not easy to fly. During its service it went through a whole series of forms and the front of the cockpit changed with them. This item matches the late form.
A clear cockpit canopy shaped on a vacuum mold, that is drawn from thin transparent film over a buck. The wall is therefore considerably thinner than on a part from a kit, and the framing and the inside of the cockpit are seen through it without distortion. The thin wall also makes it possible to cut the canopy and fit it in the open position.
Cut the canopy out with a small margin, then sand the edge with fine paper on a flat surface right down to the outline and polish it. A dip in clear gloss varnish will bring the transparency back. Glue it with clear glue or with PVA glue, which will not fog the surface. Stick masking strips onto the framing before spraying and take them off only once the paint has dried. It pays to work with a spare in hand, because thin film forgives a mistake only once.
For modelers who dislike a thick canopy from a kit and want a legible cockpit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
