The long-range variant of the Soviet medium-range missile with semi-active radar guidance, recognizable at first glance by its longer and more massive body. The set prepares it to be hung on a model already built.
The R-27 family came into being at the Vympel design bureau and entered service in the middle of the nineteen-eighties at the same time as the machines of the new generation, that is, with the MiG-29 and the Su-27. Within the series two things are distinguished: the kind of seeker head and the size of the motor. It is precisely the letter E that means an enlarged rocket motor and with it substantially greater range, so this example is noticeably longer and heavier than the basic version. Because of its weight it was carried mainly by larger machines of the Su-27 type. A conspicuous feature of the whole series is the butterfly-shaped wings in the middle of the body, which the designers chose for the sake of behavior at high angles of attack.
Check that the longer body does not collide with the landing gear bay or with the neighboring stores: with the long-range variant that does happen. The painting is rewarding: a light base, a darker seeker head and colored bands. Fit the butterfly fins to a drawing, as their rotation tends to be the most frequent mistake on scale replicas.
