About product

Royal Australian Air Force F-111 crew climbing the ladder, 1:48, Reskit

Resin figures in 1:48 scale by Reskit, capturing the crew of a General Dynamics F-111 of the Royal Australian Air Force at the moment they climb the boarding ladder toward the cockpit. It is a dynamic subject that tells a story in itself: the model stops being a static exhibit and becomes a scene caught a few seconds before takeoff. Suited to airfield vignettes and to larger dioramas alike.

The real subject

The Royal Australian Air Force operated the F-111 from the 1970s until 2010 and the nickname Pig caught on for the machine among the personnel. It was a two-seat supersonic combat aircraft with a variable-geometry wing; the crew sat side by side and boarded from above through the raised parts of the canopy. In an emergency they were saved by a jettisonable escape capsule holding the whole cockpit, not by separate ejection seats. It is precisely the high-set cockpit that is the reason why a boarding ladder turns up so often in photographs of these machines.

Painting and usage tips

Wash the castings in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks away with a saw and level the mating surfaces carefully; with figures in motion the exact placing of the feet and hands decides whether the scene reads naturally. So dry-fit everything before gluing. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue, and on larger joints a thick glue with a filler helps. Paint over a thin primer, shade the gear with a light and a dark tone and bring the folds out with a wash. Figures in motion stand out best when the whole scene is drawn together with a fine dust pigment.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of airfield dioramas and vignettes in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers of Australian F-111s who want a scene with action
  • Anyone interested in figures in dynamic poses
  • Collectors who combine a model, its crew and ground equipment

FAQ

The name describes the pose of the figures, not the extent of the casting. Whether the ladder is in the package is stated on the box, so count on that when planning the scene.

The name speaks of the crew in the plural. The exact number of pieces is stated on the box.

Put the scene together dry until the feet and hands sit against their points of support, and only then glue with cyanoacrylate glue. Sanding the mating surfaces allows fine adjustment.
