A set of masks in 1:48 scale for spraying the code letters of the Royal Air Force. The letters are painted onto the model rather than applied.

British Second World War aircraft carried large letters on the sides of the fuselage. A pair of letters marked the squadron, while a separate letter stood for the individual machine within the squadron, and between them the circular insignia was usually placed. The letters were sprayed straight onto the airframe, so on a model they look more faithful sprayed than transferred by decal: they have no glossy film under them, they make no step on the surface and they take later dusting and scuffed edges.
The mask goes on a finished, dry and even coat of paint, that is always before spraying and never after it. Degrease the area beforehand. Lay the mask on according to the guide edges, press it down and work the edges down carefully with a toothpick, so that no paint creeps under them. Spray at right angles to the surface and in several light coats; a heavy coat builds up under the edge of the mask and leaves a ridge once it is lifted off. Lift the mask off soon after the paint has dried, not days later, when the adhesive holds more firmly. Once it is off, look along the edges against the light; slight creeping can be corrected with the tip of a brush and the color of the base.
It will be appreciated by a modeler who builds British machines and wants the lettering to be the same as the rest of the finish. The extent of the set, that is which characters it holds and in what size, is given on the packaging and in the instructions enclosed by the maker. Use them also to check that the letters match the machine you are building dimensionally.
What is supplied are the masks. The model, paints and decals are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
