The set

A set of masks for spraying German markings onto a model of the Italian Reggiane Re.2005 Sagittario fighter in 1:48 scale. The insignia are applied in paint straight onto the surface of the model, so no carrier film and no glossy edge are left behind and the marking blends with the surrounding finish just as it blends on the real machine.

How to work with the masks

The mask is stuck onto a finished and thoroughly dried base coat, that is before the insignia is sprayed. The surface has to be clean and degreased. Press the edges down carefully with a stick or the blunt side of tweezers, because otherwise the paint bleeds underneath and the edge is smeared.

• apply the paint in several thin coats rather than one heavy one
• spray perpendicular to the mask and at reduced pressure
• remove the mask while the paint has only just dried
• on a curved surface lay the mask down from the center toward the edges

Who it is for

For the modeler who is building the Re.2005 in 1:48 scale and wants the markings sprayed. The procedure is slower than with a decal, but there is no risk of a bubble drying under the film or of decal silvering on a matte finish.

Worth knowing for the build

Compare the masks with the model dry before spraying and trim any overhang with a sharp blade. Plan the order of the colors in advance: the base is sprayed first, then the masking goes on, and the shade of the insignia is applied last.
