An injection-molded plastic kit of the two-seat F-CK-1D fighter in service with the Republic of China Air Force, in 1:48 scale from the Taiwanese brand Freedom Model Kits. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; besides the plastic sprues the package holds photo-etched parts and a decal sheet. The two-seat version has a lengthened canopy and a second station, so it is a little more work to build than the single-seat variant.
The F-CK-1 Ching-kuo, also referred to as the Indigenous Defense Fighter, was created in Taiwan as an answer to difficult access to foreign combat aircraft. It is a light supersonic twin-engined machine. The two-seat form serves for pilot conversion and training but remains combat capable. The letter D denotes the modernized form of the two-seat version with revised avionics. The aircraft is still one of the pillars of the Taiwanese fighter force.
Finish and paint the cockpit before you close the fuselage — on the two-seat version far more of the interior is visible than on the single-seater. It pays to mask the lengthened glazing with die-cut masks, as cutting tape by hand is tedious here. Glossy gray camouflage calls for a perfectly prepared surface, so sand the joints carefully and use a primer. Spray a gloss clear coat before the decals, then unify the sheen over the whole airframe.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
