An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet KV-1 heavy tank in the version with add-on armor (in Russian ekrany, meaning armor screens) in 1:48 scale from Hobby Boss. The model captures the vehicle with armor plates bolted to the turret and the hull, which increased its protection. The box contains a fret of photo-etched parts and decals with Soviet army markings; check the actual number of parts and marking options against the manufacturer's part number for this item.
The version known as the KV-1 Ekranami came about as an interim solution for strengthening the armor protection. Additional armor plates about 25 mm thick were bolted to the outer surfaces of the turret and to parts of the hull. This gave the tank its characteristic doubled armor look with prominent bolt heads. The extra plates did increase protection, but they further strained the already overloaded drivetrain of the heavy KV. The vehicles were used in the early defensive fighting on the Eastern Front.
Assemble and paint the running gear before you close the hull. The bolted plates and their bolts are a rewarding feature for weathering — bring them out with drybrushing and rust. Glue the plastic with thin cement and the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate. After the protective green apply a gloss coat under the decals, bring out the joints between the plates with a wash and create mud effects on the running gear with pigments.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
