Answer Plastic Kits 1:48 - the RWD-13 as equipped in September 1939. A kit of the Polish high-wing monoplane which in the days of war served as a liaison and courier machine.
Responsibility details are not available.
The RWD-13 arose in the middle of the 1930s in the Warsaw design trio of Rogalski, Wigura and Drzewiecki as a three-seat travel and touring machine. This strut-braced high-wing monoplane with a steel tube fuselage frame, a wooden wing and fabric covering had a four-cylinder engine of around 130 horsepower at the front. What made its name, though, were the automatic leading-edge slats and the landing flaps: the machine lifted off even from a short meadow and landed with a large margin, which made it a favorite aircraft of flying clubs, of ambulance versions and of liaison duties.
It was precisely its ability to fly from short strips that decided its wartime role. Machines taken over from the flying clubs carried orders around, transported officers and reported progress between units that had lost their telephone links. A number of them flew over to Romania and Hungary during the fighting retreat, while others fell into enemy hands and finished the war in foreign colors. This kit concentrates precisely on the finishes and markings of the first weeks of the war.
Recessed engraving, the braced wing and the sizeable cabin glazing determine the order of the work: first a thorough dry fit of the parts, then the interior, and only at the very end the joining of the fuselage halves. The struts are glued only once the wing has dried, so that the angles settle. Extensive glazing deserves masks, because frames done with a brush never come out as sharp as sprayed ones.
The fabric covering of the fuselage and the tail surfaces has rules of its own for painting: the slight waves between the ribs will take only a gentle transition of shade, as a hard shadow from an airbrush would turn them into sheet metal.
