About product

Hauler Sd.Kfz.250/3 cooling grilles 1:48 - photo-etched set

A set made of photo-etched sheet from the Czech maker Hauler in 1:48 scale. It replaces the cooling grilles on the German light Sd.Kfz.250 half-track carrier in the 250/3 version. It is not a kit or a finished model but a targeted accessory for the Tamiya plastic kit. An undemanding improvement with a large effect, because the grilles are visible on a model from every angle.

The real subject

The Sd.Kfz.250 was a light armored half-track that accompanied reconnaissance and mechanized units. The 250/3 version was fitted with a radio set and served as a signals vehicle for commanders; a frame or rod antenna tended to be its identifying feature. The engine was cooled by air drawn in through the grilles in the front of the superstructure, which on this type are a prominent visible item.

Why change the grilles for photo-etched ones

An injection mold cannot make a see-through opening with a thin divider. A plastic grille is therefore blanked off and the louvers are needlessly thick. Etched sheet is a fraction of a millimeter thick and the openings go right through, so shadow falls into the space behind the grille and the part stops looking like a formed surface. Sand the original plastic detail flat, degrease the metal and glue with a minimum of super glue, so that it does not run into the perforation. Spray a primer and when painting do not flood the grille with a thick coat, or you will lose the very thing you changed it for. A dark wash in the openings will reinforce the depth effect further.

Who the set is for

  • builders of German half-track vehicles in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who are bothered by blanked-off plastic grilles
  • beginners at working with photo-etch; it is a manageable first step
  • anyone interested in an improvement with an immediately visible result

This is an accessory for a build, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

Injection-molded plastic cannot do thin open perforation. A photo-etched grille has openings that really go through, so shadow appears behind it and the part looks like metal.

Yes, grilles are among the simplest photo-etched parts. Usually it is enough to cut them off, sand the original plastic flat and glue on a flat surface.

Apply thin coats and do not flood the openings. After the base color a dark wash helps, as it brings out the depth and sets the grille apart from the surrounding sheet.
