About product

Sea Harrier FRS.1 and FA.2 - exhaust nozzles, 1:48, Aires

A supplementary resin set that replaces the vectoring exhaust nozzles on a plastic Sea Harrier model. It is not an aircraft kit but one of the most effective details that can be added to this type: the nozzles are prominent on the fuselage, everybody looks at them, and the plastic parts from the box tend to have thick rims and a blind cavity. The resin casting has thin walls and openings that really do go through.

The real subject

The Sea Harrier used a turbofan engine with four rotating nozzles on the sides of the fuselage. The front pair carried cold air from the fan and the rear pair hot gas from the turbine, which is why the two pairs differ in shape and in thermal loading. By rotating the nozzles the pilot changed the direction of thrust, which gave the aircraft a short takeoff and a vertical landing. On an aircraft standing on the ground the nozzles are usually turned to the rear, and in a hover into the vertical position.

Building and painting tips

The set is rewarding even for modelers who are only starting with resin - there are few parts and the assembly is simple. Wash the castings in warm water with detergent, cut the casting block off with a saw and level the surface wet. Before you glue the nozzles in with cyanoacrylate, think about their rotation: either all of them to the rear for forward flight, or downward for a hovering presentation. The painting deserves attention, because the front and rear pairs do not look the same; the front pair tends to be closer to the metal shade of the fuselage, the rear one darker and heat-discolored. Reach for metallics that polish well, or for pigments to tint the scorching. Darken the inside of the nozzles so that the cavity reads as deep.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the Sea Harrier in both versions, the FRS.1 and the FA.2
  • modelers who want to replace blind plastic nozzles with open ones
  • beginners with resin - the assembly is undemanding
  • anyone after striking heat discoloration on metal surfaces

This is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. It is supplied unpainted; paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package.

FAQ

No, these are replacement parts for the exhaust nozzles. The Sea Harrier model has to be obtained separately.

Yes, you choose the rotation when gluing. Think it through beforehand; once the cyanoacrylate has set the parts will not move.

On the real aircraft they do: the front pair carries cold air and the rear one hot gas. When painting it is therefore worth distinguishing the shade and the degree of heat discoloration.

It is one of the easier resin upgrades. It is enough to cut off the casting block, level the surface and glue the parts in with cyanoacrylate.
