A masking set of the Dead Design brand for the glazing of a model of the de Havilland Sea Vixen in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit nor an accessory that could be stuck onto a model permanently - it is a working aid. The masks are stuck onto the clear part, the model is sprayed and once the paint has dried the masks are taken off. A sharp frame of the cabin and clean glazing are left, that is, exactly what a frame painted by hand will never give.
The Sea Vixen was a twin-boom carrier-borne fighter of the Fleet Air Arm with a crew of two. The pilot sat under a sliding canopy offset to the left of the centerline, while the second crew member worked on the right under a recessed hatch. It is precisely this asymmetry that makes the cabin of the Sea Vixen one of the most unpleasant parts in shape that can be masked with tape - the transitions of the frame are not mirror images of each other and the tape has to be cut differently on each side. A ready-made mask removes this problem.
First wash and degrease the clear part, otherwise the mask will not adhere over its whole area and the paint will run under. Lift the mask off the sheet with pointed tweezers and lay it on dry, without sliding it over the surface. After sticking each mask on, press it down with a toothpick or a wooden stick around the whole perimeter, above all in the corners. Spray in thin coats - a thick coat of paint creates an edge at the border of the mask that stays visible even after it is taken off. Remove the masks as soon as the paint is dry to the touch, not after several days; the longer they stay on the part, the more likely they are to tear the paint off with them.
