About product

Big Sin set, the Gnome engine for the Sopwith Camel in 1:48 scale from Eduard

This is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory set. At Eduard, Big Sin is a bundle that brings several individual accessories together into one box instead of buying them separately. Here the whole is built around the Gnome rotary engine, that is, around the most prominent detail a model of a First World War biplane can have, because on these machines the engine is exposed to view.

The real subject

The Sopwith Camel was a British single-seat fighter biplane of the First World War period. It was powered by a rotary engine, in which the whole cylinder block turned together with the propeller around a fixed crankshaft. One of the powerplants used was the Gnome Monosoupape engine with a single valve in the cylinder head. The rotary layout gave the aircraft a strong gyroscopic torque, which markedly affected its behavior in a turn, and the engine was covered only by a horseshoe-shaped cowling, so the cylinders stayed visible from outside.

Building and painting tips

Working with accessory parts. Wash the resin parts first in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a sharp knife and level the faces with abrasive paper, ideally wet or with respiratory protection. It is bonded with super glue; plastic cement does not work here. Apply a primer before painting. The engine looks best when the cylinders are painted in a dark iron shade, the cooling fins are picked out with a dry brush and the whole is tied together with an oil wash; it is also worth suggesting traces of oil running down the cowling, because rotary engines threw oil about.

Who the set is for

  • builders of a Sopwith Camel model in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who collect First World War aircraft
  • more experienced builders with experience of resin and super glue
  • anyone who wants a prominent engine detail visible from outside

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package. Check before buying that the set fits your kit.

FAQ

It is a bundle that brings several individual Eduard accessories together into one box, so you do not have to put them together from separate items.

It is not. It is an accessory for a plastic Sopwith Camel kit in 1:48 scale, which has to be obtained separately.

The cylinders in a dark iron shade, the fins picked out with a dry brush and the whole tied together with an oil wash. Rotary engines threw oil about, so it is also worth suggesting traces of it on the cowling.
