Luftwaffe spinner spirals - masks 1:48 from Omask

A set of masking templates in 1:48 scale intended for spraying a spiral onto a propeller spinner. It is not a decal and not a finished part, but a covering template: the spinner is sprayed with the base color, the mask is laid over it and a contrasting tone is sprayed across. The result is a painted spiral without the glossy film of a decal and without the risk that a decal will wrinkle or tear on a strongly curved surface. According to the name the set is made of Oramask material, that is of self-adhesive masking film. The same Omask line also offers the spirals in a kabuki paper form and in further scales.

What the set is for

Spirals and other markings on propeller spinners were among the typical distinguishing features of Luftwaffe machines during the Second World War. A template makes it possible to paint the pattern in the same coat of color as the rest of the model, so the surface stays uniform and the spiral can be weathered without trouble.

Usage tips

Let the spinner cure properly before masking and degrease it. Lay the film down in sections and press the edge carefully; on a conical surface the template has to adapt to the shape gradually. Spray thin coats at a lower pressure and at right angles to the surface, so that the paint does not get under the edge. Take the mask off shortly after drying, while the film of paint is still flexible. Any slight step at the edge can be leveled by fine polishing once the template has been removed.
