About product

Photo-etched set for the Sturmtiger in 1:48 scale

This set from the Czech maker Hauler holds photo-etched metal parts for the model of the German Sturmtiger heavy self-propelled vehicle. It replaces and completes those sections of a plastic kit where the simplification of the mold shows most. It is an accessory for a model that the modeler buys separately; the package holds no plastic parts of the vehicle.

The real subject

The Sturmtiger, with the production designation Sturmmörser Tiger, was a German heavy self-propelled weapon of the end of the Second World War. It was based on the chassis of the Tiger I heavy tank, on which a box-shaped armored superstructure with a 380 mm rocket launcher, originally developed for naval use, was built in place of the turret. The vehicle was meant for firing at targets in built-up areas at short range. Only a few dozen were built. For a modeler it is interesting for its massive superstructure, its huge muzzle and the handling gear for loading ammunition at the rear, that is, items that photo-etch can refine markedly.

Building and painting tips

With more complex photo-etched sets it pays to go through the whole instruction sheet before you cut the first part off, and to mark in the kit instructions the places where the photo-etch will be fitted. Most of the parts belong on the model before the hull is closed and before painting. Wash the fret in warm water with detergent and let it dry. Cut off the original plastic details that the photo-etch replaces and sand the area. Make the bends in a bender or between razor blades, and bend longer parts along their whole length at once rather than in sections. Glue with super glue picked up on a piece of wire. Once all the photo-etch is fitted, go over the model with a primer for metal and plastic, or the paint on the metal areas will come away at the first handling. The large flat areas of the superstructure will take marked weathering, dust pigments and rust streaking around the welds.

Who the set is for

  • builders of German Second World War vehicles in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who want to refine a model without a conversion
  • more experienced builders with basic practice in bending photo-etch
  • display-case models and dioramas looked at close up

This is an accessory set, not a kit of the vehicle. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory set for a plastic kit, which you buy separately.

Most of them before the hull is closed and before painting, so that the whole model can be sprayed at once.

Yes. On degreased metal without a primer the paint does not hold and comes away even during ordinary handling of the model.
