About product

Photo-etched cooling grilles for the Sturmtiger and the late Tiger in 1:48 scale

A partial set from the Czech maker Hauler aimed at the mesh over the engine compartment. According to the name it is usable both for the model of the Sturmtiger vehicle and for the late form of the Tiger heavy tank, which shared the same cooling arrangement. It is an aftermarket accessory for a kit, which the modeler buys separately.

What the grilles change on a model

On models of heavy tanks the rear deck is the most exposed area, because a viewer in front of a display case sees it from above practically always. On the real vehicle there are open grilles over the radiators, beneath which the space of the engine bay disappears. Injection-molded plastic deals with them, for technological reasons, as a solid plate with an engraved grid, which seen from above looks flat. A photo-etched grille has real openings, so depth and shadow appear. The set also makes it possible to leave part of the mesh raised or damaged, if you are building a vehicle under maintenance or after a hit.

Building and painting tips

Preparing the base is the key. For the grille to be genuinely see-through, the plastic grid usually has to be cut out or deepened and the inside of the engine compartment blackened. The Sturmtiger and the Tiger moreover have a protective screen and fan blades under the grilles, so it pays to suggest at least one layer under the surface, or the depth will be lost. Attach the photo-etched part around the edge with a minimum of super glue; any excess floods the openings and is practically impossible to put right. Apply the paint with an airbrush, heavily thinned and in several thin coats from a distance. Dry dust pigment takes excellently to finished mesh and adds the impression of dust and dirt drawn in. Do not put thick washes here; they stay in the openings and merge them into one surface.

Who the set is for

  • builders of German Second World War vehicles in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who want a targeted improvement to the most visible area of a model
  • those who build several vehicles of the Tiger series and will use the set repeatedly
  • beginners at working with photo-etch, thanks to the small extent of the set

This is an accessory set, not a kit of the vehicle. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes, the name gives both vehicles. The late form of the Tiger tank and the Sturmtiger shared the same cooling grille arrangement.

For real depth to appear, the plastic grid usually has to be removed or deepened and the inside blackened. Without that the grille lies on a solid surface.

Use dry dust pigments. A thick wash stays in the openings and visually floods the mesh into a single surface.

It is not. It is a partial accessory set for a model that you buy separately.
