About product

Photo-etched landing flaps for the Supermarine Spitfire F Mk.XVIII in 1:48

This is a specialized photo-etched set from the Czech maker Eduard, not a kit. It replaces the plastic landing flaps of a Supermarine Spitfire F Mk.XVIII model in 1:48 with metal parts from thin sheet. Plastic flaps in models tend to be molded closed and in one piece with the wing, so the model always stands on the shelf the same way. The photo-etched set lets you build the flaps lowered, that is the way a Spitfire looked after landing with the engine shut down, and it also reveals the structure of their inner face, which plastic cannot capture. The difference is especially apparent on a model on a base, because lowered flaps change the silhouette of the underside of the wing markedly.

The real subject

The Spitfire F Mk.XVIII belonged to the late versions of the British fighter powered by the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine. Against the wartime versions it had a strengthened wing and landing gear structure and a greater fuel load, which made it suited to operations over longer ranges. It entered service only after the end of the Second World War and flew above all in overseas areas. These machines are recognized by the longer nose with its bulged engine cowling panels and by the five-blade propeller.

Building and painting tips

Cut the plastic flaps off the wing with a saw or a sharp scalpel and sand the opening carefully flat, so that the metal part sits down with no gap. Bend the photo-etched parts in a bending tool slowly and step by step, so that the edge does not come out wavy. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin. Paint the inner face of the flaps and the space inside the wing before you fit the flaps, as you will not reach it with a brush later. Degrease and prime the metal before painting. A dry brush and a fine wash then pull out the structure of the ribs on the inner face.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want a Spitfire with the flaps lowered
  • Builders with at least basic experience of cutting and sanding plastic
  • Anyone interested in the postwar versions of the Spitfire in 1:48
  • Those who put a model on a base, where the underside of the wing shows

The set is neither a model nor a kit; it is an add-on to a model sold separately. The paints, the glue and the tools are not included in the package.

FAQ

They let you build the model with the flaps lowered and they have a real sheet thickness as well as the structure of the inner face, which a plastic part does not capture.

Yes. The plastic flaps are cut off the wing and the surface is sanded so that the metal part sits down. Count on a little experience.

No. It is a detail set, that is an add-on to a plastic model of the Spitfire in 1:48, which is sold separately.

Before the flaps go on. Once they are glued in place you will practically not reach it with a brush.
