About product

Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I, a mask for the British roundel 1:48 (MH models)

This set from MH models is a painting mask for 1:48 scale, cut for the British circular national insignia. It is not a kit: the masks are applied to a varnished model and oversprayed with paint, so that the insignia is created directly in the layer of color and has neither a gloss of its own nor an edge of film. The set is designed for the Tamiya kit.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I was a British single-seat fighter with all-metal stressed-skin construction, retractable landing gear and the elliptical wing that became the recognition mark of the whole line. It was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin V12. The Mk.I was the first version in series production; it gradually went through changes to the propeller, the canopy and the armament, so machines differ from one another in detail according to the time of manufacture.

A multicolor roundel step by step

British roundels consist of several concentric circles, and this is exactly where masking proves itself most, because a decal with thin rings tends to break over engraved lines. The order is set: you start from the lightest tone in the middle and work outward to the darker ones, or the other way around depending on how the masks are cut. Spray each layer thinly and let it dry before you lay the next mask down. Watch the concentricity while applying the masks, not after spraying, because once a ring is out of place a repair means respraying the whole area with the base color. It also pays to check the diameter of the mask against the plan of the wing before you start, as the size of a roundel differs between schemes.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of a Spitfire Mk.I model in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want to spray the roundels rather than apply them
  • Anyone interested in clean rings without decal film breaking
  • Airbrush users used to layered masking

This is not a kit but a masking accessory. Neither the model nor the paints needed for spraying are in the package, unless stated otherwise.
