A masking set 1:48 T-38C Talon NASA Basic contains cut self-adhesive templates in kabuki paper for masking the glazing of a model of the supersonic trainer in the service of the American space program.

The set from New Ware is intended for painting a model of the Talon in 1:48 scale. The templates are cut from kabuki paper, that is, from a thin masking material that holds its shape, adapts well to the curves of the canopy and leaves no sticky film once lifted. The Basic level denotes the smallest of the levels of extent in the range, that is, the basic variant aimed above all at the glazing.
Anyone who is only just trying masking sets will appreciate that Basic deals with exactly what takes the most time in work by hand and most often goes wrong: the boundary between frame and glass. More extensive levels make sense on machines with an intricate surface, but on the slender Talon with its long two-seat canopy it is the glazing itself that is the decisive detail. Painting the frames by spraying also keeps the sheen uniform with the surrounding airframe, which stands out at once on the light service finishes of the space agency's aircraft.
Never sand or polish the transparent part before the mask is applied; every matte trace will be emphasized under the paint. Transfer the templates with tweezers, start with the longest straight sections and only at the end add the small corner pieces. Direct the spray at right angles from above, not at a slant under the edge of the mask. If you are building a light finish, put a fine base coat under it, otherwise thin coats will not give an even opaque surface. Keep the unused remainder of the sheet; it comes in handy for masking cockpits on other models too.
